Small Brains, Big Ideas: Biomedical Insights from Invertebrates

The third version of this successful practical course will take place from October 6th to 15th, 2014. The course will consist of lectures and hands-on laboratory exercises that will expose Latin-American students/junior Faculty to recent advances and modern techniques in neurosciences, using invertebrates as model systems. As in previous years, the course will primarily focus on Drosophila melanogaster and Caenorhabditis elegans, and the use of these animal models in basic neuroscience and biomedical research. However it also includes work on honeybees, which is a powerful invertebrate model for research on learning and memory.
The course will cover subjects ranging from genetic approaches to the study of brain and synapse development, cellular and molecular neuroscience, analysis of brain circuits, and behavior. Instructors include faculty members from the host institutions as well as renowned scientists in each field. This allows students to gain first hand experience with these model systems and to interact and network with leaders in the specific areas of research. The course ends with a one-day international symposium.
